The National, a Thompson Hotel is the largest renovation multi-use project in Texas that consists of an urban luxury hotel with residences, retail, ballrooms, restaurants, bars, a spa, rooftop pool patios, and many amenities. There is also a stunning observation deck on the 50th floor that is open to the public. Originally designed and built in the 1960s, this building has a rich history as a mid-century modern architectural gem by George Dahl. The design concept of the interior architectural lighting was intended to showcase all of the beautiful artwork and accentuate the featured areas while offering adequate ambient lighting using mostly indirect lighting for visual comfort. All decorative lighting and lamps were reviewed by our team to ensure the correct warm color temperature matched the architectural lighting. We were faced with several challenges as this building is considered a historic building. For the lighting design, that meant historical compliances were enforced and existing downlight locations and fixtures had to be reused in several public space areas.
