China Overseas Jade Lane project is located in the heart of Haidian District, Beijing, a core area for educational resources, surrounded by several prestigious universities and in close proximity to the upcoming North Palace Museum. The site is divided into two enclosed clusters by a municipal street, with each cluster connected through villas and fire lanes, creating a series of small garden spaces.
These arrangements allow the landscape to provide a harmonious and integrated environment for the buildings.
The landscape design centers on the core concepts of “equality, freedom, and community”. It breaks away from traditional centralized green space models, incorporating the themes of 12 academic institutions into the inter-building gardens. Garden pathways are used to link these spaces, offering both independent and shared uses, and creating a community space that blends campus atmosphere with a cultural ambiance. The materials used for landscape structures primarily consist of red bricks, establishing a cultural tone that echoes the building facades.
The gates of the northern and southern plots adopt different forms within the same design language, helping to mitigate the sense of separation caused by the municipal street. Upon entering through the gates, visitors are greeted by continuous rows of trees that form a tree-lined corridor, creating a “green dome” made by distinctive canopies. Beneath the trees, double rows of flowing water pools are embedded, creating a suspended garden walkway that elevates the functional passage into a natural, ceremonial space for returning home. The tree-lined corridor extends into both plots, connecting the 12 scattered courtyard gardens, offering each residence equal access to different types of social and recreational spaces.
