Mori to Kawa ni Saku Hana

Mori to Kawa ni Saku Hana transforms a 70-year-old former textile factory not simply by preserving it, but by redefining its social role as a new form of community infrastructure.

Once dedicated to manufacturing, the building now brings together coworking, a café, a library, learning, dialogue, and community activities, creating a place where people, knowledge, and culture intersect.

The project does not attempt to design interaction itself. Instead, it creates the conditions in which relationships can emerge naturally. A variety of places to stay, long shared tables, quiet areas for concentration, connections to gardens and greenery, natural materials, light, and calm environmental systems allow people to choose where and how they spend time. Dialogue and stillness coexist, while unexpected encounters become part of everyday life.

The architecture also continues beyond completion. The architect remains directly involved in operating the building, using daily work, learning programs, lectures, markets, and community activities as an ongoing process of observation and feedback. Now in its fourth year of continuous operation, the project has developed into an active local platform rather than a finished architectural object.

Today, the building supports 20 coworking members and has hosted more than 40 lectures, 10 community markets, and 15 community events. These activities demonstrate how architecture can continue generating social value over time.

Mori to Kawa ni Saku Hana proposes that adaptive reuse is not merely about extending the physical life of an existing building. It is about redefining architecture’s social purpose and creating a framework through which new relationships, activities, and values can continue to emerge long after completion.
