Butterfly Orchid

Butterfly Orchid is an avant-garde production created to elevate the artistry of performing art. It is a fantasy about being trapped by love, transforming for love and the final ultimate sacrifice for devoted love. It melds a piano music with animated artwork. Paintings from artist, Paul Chiang were used as the foundation from which 3D multimedia animation techniques catalyze the art to life. Through the combination of romantic music with multimedia technology and contemporary/abstract moving art, diverse styles are revealed to present a dramatic music-based performing art that is a banquet for the senses.





Butterfly Orchid came to me in a dream after a visit to the orchid botanical garden. Taiwan is known as the kingdom of orchids and butterflies. The Psychopsis Kalihi, Devil Orchid is an enchanting orchid that I am drawn to because of its resemblance to a butterfly and dancer. In my dream, a butterfly is captured and was set free because of her beauty. The butterfly transforms into a woman and falls in love with her captor, but the man did not reciprocate. Understanding his passion as a botanist, she transforms herself into a rare orchid winning his heart.





Plato once said music gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything. Music is timeless, immortal and abstract but invisible. Butterfly Orchid, a piano composition in ABA form, brings my dreamy musical fantasy to life. We explored various mediums and styles from the romantics, surreal to contemporary. Paintings are transformed into motion pictures, intertwining and interacting in a marriage with its soul mate, music. It morphs into a conceptual, kinetic, digital and video art.





A flower blossoms and withers. Life, fate, and love each have a beginning and an end. Eastern stories like the “Butterfly Orchid” and Western stories like “Romeo and Juliet”, both share insurmountable obstacles in their pursuit of love. Some stories end happily and some tragically. With Butterfly Orchid, I wish all the believers in love, a happy life and may all your dreams come true.
