As approaching this project, the design team subverted the conventional sedate image of libraries, while incorporating color aesthetics and modern office scenes to create a novel public space.

Based on thorough investigation and the client’s requirements, the design team adopted the concept of “boxes in box”. The team inserted several “boxes” into the space, to create meeting rooms, research rooms and discussion areas for the faculty and students. While satisfying basic functional requirements like reading and study, the design introduces additional practical functions into the library.

In accordance with the building’s fire protection requirements, the space is organized with a loop-featured layout. Passage loops are formed between boxes, which optimizes the circulation route and spatial configuration.

Varied functional areas are set, including independent “boxes” for immersive reading and study, and public reading areas that cater to the faculty and students’ demands.

Relaxing blue, dynamic orange, and refreshing green, a variety of bright colors inject a vigorous vibe into the space. Each “box” is stained with distinct pure colors, creating a neat yet fun visual effect and meanwhile producing a pleasing ambience.

White, as the dominant tone in the space, naturalizes all chromatic colors to offer a harmonious visual experience. The unique signage design is combined with spatial attributes, which not only guides the way but also decorates the walls and bookshelves, producing a unique aesthetic visual effect.

Small-scale simple white installations are set at corners, to maximize the utilization of space and strengthen the functionality of the library.

The insertion of office scenes breaks the “silent” state of library space, and enlivens it through the dynamic “boxes”. Moving along the circular corridors, the students will feel like they’re passing through several tiny office rooms, which reveal a workplace ambience differentiated from the academic vibe whilst integrating freshness and dynamics into the space.

This place is far more beyond a library. Rich functions and novel concepts result in an intriguing, diversified space that combines both practicality and aesthetics. It invites students to enter this public cultural space for contemplation or interaction, and makes the library more significant beyond its property.
