About The Entry
All this time, the evolution of fashion closely conforms to human life cycle and social development. The outline of clothing often reflect the aesthetic value of the time and culture, while space inside the clothes indicates distance from individual to the surroundings physically and spiritually.
From 16th to 19th century, catering to the social aesthetic, women in the western world used to wear a typical kind of dress, with large flowing hemlines and cage inside, to blur and unify the curves of the lower body. In comparison, now as the society tends to appreciate diversity, women’s choices of clothing are rising towards the unbound as self expression.
The jewelry work themes to reshape the crinoline, a typical garment that used to alter and solidify the shape of women’s body. Key elements of the garment, such as hoops, cascading hemlines, are extracted into basic geometric forms decorated with lab-grown diamonds. By repeating and intertwining these shapes in dimensions, designer attempts to create a unique sense of dynamic and space.
The jewelry pieces also celebrate this social shift. The repeating elements flow into multiple directions and beyond constraints, which challenges the stereotype of crinoline. It is also a metaphor of the changing space between clothes and human bodies, society and individuals. Various cuts of lab-grown diamonds and selected pearls are linked to the main structure to enrich the visual effect of the pieces, reflecting aesthetic and ideological changes in fashion over time.
