About The Entry

This project is about the interior design of Chao Jin Yuan Gourmet Restaurant, which is located in Zhujiang New Town CBD and specialize in mid-to-high end Teochew cuisine. In the pre-design phase, the design team specially travelled to Chaozhou City to seek inspirations that better fit the positioning of Chao Jin Yuan. They stayed there for more than one month, experiencing the cultural customs, architectural aesthetics and unique atmosphere of Chaozhou. What they felt there is now boiled down to this restaurant space in an inclusive and emotional design language.

The interior dominated by a dark colorway exudes a tranquil and elegant atmosphere. The combinations of different color blocks are coupled with structural overlap and inclusion, greatly enhancing the visually layered experience. Different spaces in this restaurant are leavened with century-old wood carvings, which were once decorative items on Teochew ancient buildings. These Teochew wood carvings are considered as a synthesis of carving and painting crafts, whose lacquered and gold-foiled surface shows a sheen in light to artistically liven up this darkly-colored interior space. Another highlight of the interior decor lies in the collision and blending between the artifacts from different historical periods and various textures, allowing diners to enjoy a visual feast of the cultural history across time and space while tasting prime Teochew cuisine.

The century-old wood carvings and properly faded red walls set off an approachable, and agreeable ambience in this restaurant, as if it were in a home yard. Here, diners are able to settle down and enjoy a leisure moment, chatting with friends and family members whilst also savoring delicacies. In a nutshell, rich design languages applied in this space build an association among the city, cultural customs, and artifacts, and ultimately reach the goal set for this design project — a space steeped in aesthetics.
