The homestead, comprising three courtyards, is enclosed by the forested settlement typical of Western Sichuan. #1 Courtyard, located at the entrance, is a typical quadrangle courtyard functioning as a reception and exhibition space. Through the restoration and use of authentic building materials like rammed earth and wood, the pure essence of traditional architecture in Western Sichuan is revealed, embodying the residential culture and humanistic values of the region in the past.#2 Courtyard demonstrates a new way of thinking about the aesthetics and utility of modern architecture, symbolizing the openness and functionality of modern architectural design. As a multi-functional hall and dining space, it is surrounded by vegetable gardens on the west side, woods on the south side, and vast fields on the east side, with privileged landscape conditions. The roof shape is a continuation of the deep eaves of the traditional Western Sichuan residence, with the west side close to the earth to avoid excessive sunlight into the interior, and the east side extending towards the field to provide a pleasant outdoor activity platform. The entire program emphasizes the light and airy essence of modern Western Sichuan architecture and its integration with the surroundings in a concise manner. #3 Courtyard is an independent dwelling unit that combines tradition and modernity, standing for the exploration and practice of a sustainable lifestyle in the future. While the building is constructed using traditional materials and methods, it infuses modern technology in its functional design, including solar PV panels and a ground-source heat pump system to fulfill energy requirements. Certain features like elevated floors, rammed-earth facades, inner courtyard with patio, and double-paneled hollow door and window systems are used to effectively minimize energy consumption.Transitioning from tradition to modernity and envisioning the future, each courtyard not only exhibits an exemplary rural lifestyle tailored for contemporary individuals, but also reflects the idyllic life style to which the Chinese people aspire. It reveals the authentic charm and historical significance of the ancient forested settlement typical of Western Sichuan, drawing individuals to reconnect with and know rural living, while promoting a vision of sustainable, low-carbon development.
