Re-Bridge is a visionary design proposal that reimagines neglected and underutilized spaces beneath bridges, transforming them into affordable housing and vibrant urban areas. This approach addresses critical urban challenges such as housing shortages, high real estate costs, and the disconnection of urban spaces caused by elevated transportation infrastructure.
Research shows that elevated transportation systems—such as highways, railways, and light rails—are often situated in densely populated cities facing land shortages, high real estate costs, and inadequate affordable housing. The 2023 Demographia report identifies 81 cities and regions worldwide with severely unaffordable housing markets, many of which include under-bridge spaces. Leveraging this insight, Re-Bridge proposes converting these overlooked areas into affordable housing developments. This initiative addresses the housing crisis while reconnecting urban areas divided by elevated infrastructure, creating a more integrated urban environment.
Repurposing under-bridge spaces poses challenges, including limited natural light, privacy concerns, noise, pollution, and dust. To overcome these issues, innovative strategies are proposed, such as separating the structural framework of housing from the bridge, elevating residential units to create public spaces below, and integrating vertical greenery and perforated panels to enhance natural light, privacy, and environmental quality. Additionally, retail spaces and community parks are incorporated at ground level to enhance the urban fabric and reconnect divided neighborhoods.
A detailed proposal has been developed for a site beneath the bridges near Brightline Miami Station in Miami, Florida. This project has been celebrated for its visionary use of under-bridge spaces, providing affordable housing while addressing urban disconnection. By creating functional, sustainable, and inclusive spaces, Re-Bridge exemplifies how neglected areas can be transformed into assets that contribute to urban vitality and social equity.
