NIAP - Nasiriyah International Airport Project

Inspired by the enduring presence of the date palm tree, the terminal's spatial design emulates a grove, with abstracted geometries forming a shaded, permeable under-canopy space. Essential airport functions—check-in, security, retail, lounges, and baggage handling—are integrated within this "forest city" concept.

The terminal features a two-level linear configuration: the ground floor houses arrival and departure halls, security checkpoints, and baggage systems; the upper level contains domestic and international lounges, corridors, CIP facilities, and retail areas. The design allows seamless switching between international and domestic flows, ensuring adaptability to future demands.

Tree-like overhangs around the terminal provide a sun-shading system, utilizing low-emissivity (low-e) glass tailored to different orientations and seasonal sunlight, balancing energy efficiency, transparency, and comfort. Inverted conical skylights introduce soft daylight and promote natural ventilation through a stack effect. The design holistically integrates landscape, architecture, and interior elements, achieving harmony in form, material, and color, and creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower draws inspiration from the date palm's slender trunk and radiating leaves, supporting the control cabin at its apex. An encircling observation deck offers panoramic views for monitoring aircraft movements.

Adjacent office and hotel buildings adopt local architectural strategies: recessed small windows, solid masses, and inward-facing layouts to mitigate the hot climate. Central courtyards, arcades, vegetation, and water features create comfortable microclimates. Layered architectural volumes evoke the clustered settlements of the Mesopotamian plains, reflecting cultural continuity and spatial richness.

Six millennia ago, early settlers established palm-grove city on this land, marking the dawn of civilization. Today, a modern airport—rooted in traditional wisdom and advanced technology—connects this ancient land to the world, serving once again as a gateway for exchange and progress.
