Saryan Steps: Where Urban Living Embraces Art

The Saryan Steps project reimagines a central public space in Yerevan by blending urban revitalization with cultural storytelling. Led by the Keron Development Foundation in partnership with the Kentron Administrative District and Mane Tiles, this initiative is a bold expression of Armenia’s evolving approach to public design: one that honors heritage while embracing contemporary aesthetics. Located at Martiros Saryan Street 12, the project transforms a neglected staircase and its surrounding area into a vibrant, inclusive, and inspiring urban environment. At the heart of the project is a striking mosaic reproduction of Martiros Saryan’s celebrated painting “Armenia” - crafted from 1,620 entirely handmade ceramic tiles. This artwork turns the steps into a cultural landmark, offering passersby an immersive visual experience rooted in national identity. Beyond its artistic centerpiece, the initiative includes full-scale beautification: renovation of platforms and retaining walls, expanded greenery, new benches, and fresh landscaping. Safety and accessibility are improved through custom-designed lighting integrated into handrails and pathways, creating a space that is both functional and welcoming, specifically when it is dark outside and people gather around the warmth that those steps vibrate. As part of the Keron Development Foundation’s broader territorial development strategy, the Saryan Steps project aims to improve quality of life in Armenia’s urban core. It does so not only by enhancing the physical landscape, but also by encouraging civic pride, walkability, and cultural engagement. With the Saryan Steps, Yerevan gains more than just a renovated passageway: it gains a living canvas that connects people to place, past to present, and culture to community.
