About The Entry

This church maximizes the use of locally abundant bamboo as its primary structural material. Its design typically incorporates soaring spires or arched structures, leveraging bamboo's flexibility and strength to create a sacred, well-ventilated, and light-filled interior space. Woven bamboo techniques are extensively applied to walls and ceilings.

When you draw out two straight lines and loft them to form a surface, it becomes a ruled surface. This type of surface is easy to construct because every structural line within it is straight. However, if you try to build this surface using bamboo, the result won't be perfect due to bamboo's natural curve. So, what if we cleverly embrace this curve? Instead of insisting on a ruled surface, we transform it into a curved version. The result is a roof type common in tropical regions, somewhat like an arch, but sharper and better at guiding wind.

By rotating and combining four curved versions of the ruled surface, we formed a pavilion-like structure. This structure lands on four points while its sweeping roof and eaves soar upward, all reaching the same height. Next, we staggered the apexes of the four curved surfaces at varying heights, creating openings. This design effectively captures the southeastern winds in the Moramanga region, achieving "passive ventilation".
