The Shuiche Service Area of the Shantou–Meizhou Expressway is located in the coastal mountainous region of eastern Guangdong Province, China—an area where Chaoshan and Hakka cultures intertwine. Accordingly, the service area is positioned as a cultural-themed stop that embodies the essence of both traditions. We hope that travelers, during their brief stay, can experience the unique regional identity of this place.
The overall design harmonizes with the surrounding landscape: the building massing is broken down into smaller units that undulate in response to the hilly terrain, while the light and fluid skyline reflects the graceful rhythm of the nearby Meijiang River. The roofline draws inspiration from the overlapping gables of Hakka settlements, abstractly merging them with the distinctive “cuo jiao tou” elements of Chaoshan architecture.
Considering the subtropical climate, the interior design emphasizes ventilation and shading, adopting passive energy-saving strategies to minimize operational and maintenance costs. Through the double-height main entrance hall and flowing atrium spaces, the design fosters a pleasant public experience and enhances commercial vitality.
Ultimately, the project showcases the cultural identity represented by the Shantou–Meizhou Expressway, awakening awareness of harmony between people and nature, and establishing a new-generation brand image for modern transportation service facilities.
