Reimagining Wa - Fū Aesthetics

This project involves the renovation of a 30-year-old duplex residence, guided by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, which finds beauty in imperfection, transience, and simplicity. The design reinterprets the spatial potential of an aging structure, redefining the modern experience of living in a multi-level home. Natural wood tones, whitewashed walls, and minimalist lighting form the foundation of a tranquil and timeless interior atmosphere, where the passage of time becomes an aesthetic expression.

Natural oak textures, whitewashed walls, and refined minimalist lighting compose the foundation of a tranquil, timeless atmosphere. The design evokes emotional stillness and visual purity while maintaining practicality and comfort. It is a dwelling that not only fulfills the needs of daily life but also offers a meditative retreat from urban intensity—where light, texture, and shadow interact to form a rhythm of quiet beauty. Every detail, from the placement of furniture to the layering of materials, was orchestrated to cultivate calm, continuity, and a sense of grounded warmth.

In the public zone, a double-height ceiling enhances openness, while low-saturation furniture extends visual depth. The L-shaped sofa by the window introduces natural light and softness, framing a scene of effortless relaxation.

The kitchen adopts a dual-wall linear configuration—one side designed for storage and display, the other for cleaning and cooking—promoting smooth circulation and operational clarity. The consistent dialogue between oak wood and matte white finishes extends throughout the home, establishing both unity and textural balance.

The staircase, with solid wood handrails and black steel details, captures the tactile intersection of craftsmanship and rustic modernity. Sliding doors on the upper floor preserve privacy while upholding the minimalist aesthetic. In the bathroom, vertical white tiles and gray-toned flooring create a grounded yet airy composition, while wood cabinetry and circular mirrors subtly echo the design language of the main living area.

Through careful attention to proportion, texture, and light, the project distills the wabi-sabi spirit into a living experience that honors stillness, imperfection, and authenticity—where simplicity becomes the truest expression of beauty.
