Nestled in the core area of Linping District, Hangzhou, the project integrates the profound cultural heritage of Jiangnan water towns with Shanghai-style refinement, shaping a living space that embodies both cultural connotation and modern functionality. Centered on the aesthetic theme of “Urban Retreat, Modern Shanghai Style,” it focuses on the multi-generational living needs of families around the age of forty, conveying the living concept of a “textured life.”

Grounded in local culture, the design harmoniously fuses Chinese and Western artistic expressions—such as references to paintings by Chang Yu—creating a balance between Jiangnan’s softness and Shanghai’s urban elegance. It tailors functional spaces to different life stages, introducing age-appropriate areas such as a leisure drinking nook for the male host, a trendy toy room for the teenage daughter, and a tea ceremony space for the elders. A modular pegboard storage system enhances both flexibility and aesthetic order.

The layout follows the logic of “24-Hour Textured Living,” combining shared family interaction with individual privacy through scientific zoning. Public areas emphasize communication and comfort, while private rooms embody personality and intimacy. Each space—from the violin-inspired girl’s room to the ritualized reading balcony—translates daily life into scenes of aesthetic experience.

Aesthetically, the design explores the interplay of “lines and colors,” featuring furniture that blends retro charm and modern simplicity. Lighting pieces such as Macchina della Luce enrich spatial layering, while warm chandeliers and bistro-style bay windows infuse ritual and warmth. Guided by the “less is more” principle, artworks and tea ceremony ornaments quietly narrate cultural integration and refined living.

Sustainability runs through the project, emphasizing natural, durable materials and modular adaptability to extend spatial longevity. Locally sourced crafts reduce carbon emissions while inheriting regional traditions. Altogether, the project exemplifies a refined interpretation of contemporary Jiangnan living—where cultural depth, functional innovation, and sustainable aesthetics converge to create an elegant urban retreat rooted in emotion, culture, and modern life.
