Easy Livin'

Located in an up-and-coming neighborhood, this compact residential property required a design approach inspired by the efficiency of a Japanese apartment—every inch had to work hard. The clients wanted a fully realized outdoor extension of their home: a covered living area for watching “the game,” a complete outdoor kitchen with gas and smoker grills, a lounge deck with sauna access, a fire pit, meaningful privacy, and a clear path from their detached garage.

To achieve this ambitious program within a tight footprint, the site was organized into distinct outdoor rooms, each carefully proportioned to feel open while functioning at maximum efficiency. Thoughtful adjacencies, clear circulation, and the strategic use of elevation changes allowed multiple experiences to coexist seamlessly.

The kitchen and dining zone became the centerpiece of the project. Custom steel cabinetry finished in a bold green color establishes the modern, curated aesthetic. Porcelain countertops extend into a dramatic porcelain-clad, steel-reinforced dining table that spans between the upper deck and the lower patio. Engineered to make an extended, unsupported leap, this table solves a grade challenge while providing dual utility—standard dining height on the deck and bar height on the patio—transforming necessity into a defining design feature.

Site constraints strongly shaped the final form. Restrictive municipal setbacks, poor existing grading and drainage, and adjacency to unimproved neighboring properties required careful spatial problem-solving and strategic screening solutions. On this narrow lot, the success of the modern design depended on precision, restraint, and exacting detail, ensuring no space was wasted and every junction resolved cleanly.

Material selections reinforces the bespoke nature of the project: the green steel cabinetry, the tiled TV wall, the paver patio, and the subtly angled concrete walkway that guides movement from the detached garage into the main outdoor living area. A water-wise planting palette softens the architecture, strengthens privacy, and supports a low-maintenance, climate-appropriate landscape.

Designed and modeled in AutoCAD with Land F/X and SketchUp, this project demonstrates how disciplined planning, innovative detailing, and thoughtful material use can transform a small, challenging yard into a cohesive, high-performance outdoor retreat tailored for the clients’ “Easy Livin’” lifestyle.
