Soft Boundaries

This residence began as a completely bare-shell unit, designed for a couple and their two children. The homeowners envisioned a home with clear functional boundaries, where each family member could enjoy a private bathroom — a response to both their evolving life stages and long-term living needs. At the same time, the home required a focused workspace that would not disrupt the rhythm of daily life.

Given the absence of pre-defined partitions, the design team reconstructed the spatial framework to clearly distinguish public and private zones while maintaining flexibility for future adjustments. The study, positioned within the living area, became the central node of the design. A solid wall would have segmented and compressed the public space, so a set of movable glass sliding doors was introduced instead. This allows the space to shift freely between openness and enclosure: when the doors are open, sightlines extend to amplify the living area; when closed, the study transforms into a calm, focused workspace.

The overall aesthetic follows a light American style, defined by warm materials, rational lines, and balanced proportions — creating an elegant yet composed living atmosphere. The design does not seek stylistic display, but rather aims to establish a contemporary domestic order — one that flexibly adapts to changing family dynamics and the interplay between living and working life.
