The project is a modern wabi-sabi residence designed for a family of four. The “backyard” serves as a spatial metaphor, offering children freedom while providing adults with a retreat from demanding work. The design centers on calmness, softness, and stress relief. Its spatial language draws on curved forms, daylight modulation, and warm wood materials. Gentle lines connect each zone, guiding a transition from the external world to a more grounded rhythm of living.
Confronted with an irregular layout and limited daylight at the entry due to the adjacent garage, the design employs curved strategies to reinforce spatial flow, introducing a suspended cabinetry system as the primary anchor. The cabinetry integrates the entry partition, storage, and media wall into a unified element, extending natural light deeper into the entry and resolving the previously dim arrival. A diagonally framed wood-veneer slatted ceiling reorganizes existing beams, reducing spatial heaviness while enhancing visual flow and depth.
The public areas adopt an open-plan configuration where light and shadow link the living room, dining area, and kitchen while maintaining spatial continuity. The living room receives generous natural light filtered through dark-toned blinds, creating a layered rhythm throughout the day. A white L-shaped sofa and soft rug lighten the composition, reinforcing openness.
The dining area is organized around a solid wood table and multi-toned chairs. A wood-veneer ceiling defines the zone, ensuring continuity between cooking, everyday family use, and dining circulation. The kitchen prioritizes efficiency with an elongated dual-sided work surface that streamlines workflow. Rounded backsplash edges improve safety while softening the profile. Metal-framed upper cabinetry and dedicated appliance storage preserve clarity and order.
The master room is composed around a grey-blue artistic painted headboard wall with soft tonal layering. Layered curtains regulate daylight and privacy, while a low-saturation palette and restrained lighting create a calm, restorative setting.
The existing structural framework was preserved to reduce construction waste. Low-VOC artistic painting with BV certification and durable wood materials establish a stable foundation for long-term use. Through precise spatial planning addressing daylight, circulation, and storage, the design achieves a refined balance between function, aesthetics, and daily living.
