Located along the eastern flank of the Guangzhou-Zhuhai West Expressway, this toll station stands as a key transportation portal at Guangzhou’s southern gateway, linking the city to the Greater Bay Area. Transcending traditional transportation architecture, the project harmoniously blends regional culture, modern aesthetics, and human-centered design to create an innovative public landmark that is both iconic and highly functional.

The design draws inspiration from Zhuangzi’s allegory of the Roc’s southward journey and the lush landscapes of Lingnan, embodying the poetic theme—The Roc in Flight, Lingnan’s Banana Leaf furled. The east-west canopy stretches 120 meters across the sky like a sweeping cloud, echoing the Roc’s outstretched wings sheltering the flow of traffic below. Complementing this, the slender 30-meter north-south truss evokes the delicate veins of banana leaves, introducing rhythmic elegance and capturing the distinctive charm of Lingnan. A crisp white palette, accented with warm wood tones, fosters an inviting and tranquil atmosphere. This infusion of human warmth into a sleek and visually striking structure transforms each passage through the station into a brief yet meaningful cultural encounter.

More than just an aesthetic statement, the design places equal emphasis on functional innovation and user-centered planning. The layout focuses on intuitive circulation and clear zoning, dividing the space into a core toll-collection area and versatile service areas to ensure smooth traffic flow and straightforward guidance. Material selection prioritizes durability and environmental responsibility, utilizing weather-resistant and recyclable components such as fluorocarbon-coated aluminum panels, wood-look aluminum panels, and laminated glass. Modular prefabrication further enhances construction efficiency, reinforcing the project’s commitment to green building and sustainable development.

By translating Lingnan’s cultural symbols into contemporary transportation architecture, this toll station transcends its functional role to become a vivid expression of regional identity. It stands not only as a showcase of local pride, but also sets a new benchmark for public infrastructure, demonstrating how cultural resonance and ecological consciousness can be meaningfully integrated into built environments.
