About The Entry
Located in the East Bund sector of Shanghai's Yangpu District, Tong'an Li stands on a site with a history dating back to the 1930s. The original site was composed of modern Shikumen (stone-framed gate) lilong architecture and a singular industrial building, characterized by a well-preserved, traditional "fish-bone" spatial texture. To accommodate contemporary living standards, the design team conducted a meticulous evaluation of the historical structures. Adopting a strategy of "revitalization through reconstruction," the project reinterprets the traditional Shikumen style through a modern lens. The new residential cluster strictly respects the original spatial fabric while introducing open public nodes. This approach not only elevates the quality of the living environment but also achieves a harmonious balance between historical preservation and urban regeneration. Tong'an Li aims to initiate a paradigm shift in urban renewal, moving beyond the singular concept of "preservation and reconstruction" toward a philosophy of "fusion and reinterpretation." The urban landscape is no longer defined by a unified standard of restoration. Instead, by meticulously curating material application and tracing the genealogy of architectural details, the project realizes a richer, more diverse urban morphology.
