About The Entry

Originally designed in the late 1980s by esteemed academicians Mo Bozhi and He Jingtang, the Memorial Hall of Lingnan Painting School at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (GAFA) stands as a protected architectural landmark. Decades of use, however, revealed significant challenges, including structural aging, inadequate facilities, a damp and underutilized basement, and a functional scope too narrowly confined to campus-based collection and academic exchange. Consequently, its potential relationship with the surrounding city remained largely untapped.

The transformative redesign addresses these issues through a holistic reorientation. The primary public entrance is strategically relocated from the inward-facing northern side to the southern Changgang East Road, directly engaging the urban fabric. Crucially, the earth berm that once separated the building from the street is excavated to create a generous sunken urban plaza. This bold intervention floods the formerly problematic basement with light and air, transforming it into a vibrant new public foyer and effectively dissolving the boundary between the memorial hall and the city.

Complementing this spatial reconfiguration, the project thoughtfully upgrades functionality and accessibility. New ramps and an interior elevator are introduced, while updated exhibition cabinets, restrooms, and a professional archival repository enhance operational capacity. Meanwhile, the iconic northern lotus pond is revitalized with stepping stones, curated rocks, and cascading water features, deepening the dialogue between architecture and landscape.

Ultimately, this renovation advances a contemporary reinterpretation of spatial commemoration, shifting from static visual commemoration to an embodied and publicly engaged heritage experience. By reconfiguring circulation and spatial sequences, the design fosters a compelling journey that invites lingering, interaction, and reflection, demonstrating how historic architecture can be strategically reinvented to remain relevant.
