About The Entry
When design becomes a poetic language, and the spirit of place resonates with the memory of the city, a new narrative unfolds. At the Prism Exhibition Hall, MDO redefines the logic of contemporary exhibition design. More than a vessel for brand expression, the project is a speculative spatial experiment—reviving Art Deco aesthetics while reinterpreting local cultural symbols.
At the entrance, a motorized sliding door articulated with diamond geometry evokes the elegance of classic Art Deco. Precision engineering and a refined metallic finish establish a ceremonial threshold, immediately signaling a space of distinction.
Responding to the site’s narrow, elongated proportions, the design introduces two sculptural geometric volumes that segment the layout and define functional zones. These forms choreograph a spatial sequence inspired by Shanghai’s iconic longtang alleyways, guiding movement through compression and release.
Colonnades and shifting light animate the interstitial spaces between these volumes, recalling the experience of a garden promenade—bu yi jing yi, where each step reveals a new scene. Abstracted diamond motifs, derived from the brand’s identity, recur throughout the space, mediating between ornament and architecture while anchoring the design within its urban context.
A floating chandelier, inspired by Art Deco geometry, serves as the visual centerpiece. Its faceted form echoes the diamond motifs woven throughout the interior, achieving a refined balance between order and ornament. This dialogue between symmetry and embellishment establishes a cohesive visual language—functional, artistic, and sensorial.
Mirrored ceiling panels extend the perceived spatial depth, blurring the boundary between reflection and reality. The rationality of geometric structure gives way to moments of quiet surrealism. Positioned as a social anchor, the water bar introduces an atmosphere of understated opulence through its generous scale and sculptural clarity, supporting both visual contemplation and social interaction.
As magnolia imagery is reimagined as a contemporary totem and the memory of alleyways resurfaces through rhythmic spatial movement, MDO creates more than an exhibition space—it activates cultural memory through design. Here, decorative art is no longer a historical reference, but a living language through which all elements converge, revealing a poetic spatial essence rooted in place and oriented toward the future.
