Gentle Domain, Quiet Living

The project is the designer’s own residence. Rather than responding to market-driven stylistic trends, the design begins with personal living conditions and long-term residential needs, guided by the principle of “not to please others, but to please oneself.” Curved lines are used to redraw the contours of the home, allowing daily life to feel more comfortable and composed both visually and psychologically. The overall atmosphere is rooted in modern minimalism, with grayscale, warm gray, and black forming the primary layers, returning the space to a state of calm and restraint. Light becomes the main source of variation. Through the interplay of adjustable artificial lighting and natural daylight, the space maintains visual stability and endurance over long periods of use, allowing it to remain quietly engaging rather than visually demanding.

The highlights lie in the rescaling of the social area and the introduction of natural daylight. The original layout followed a conventional four-bedroom, a living room, and a dining room configuration. One bedroom was reconfigured into an open study, allowing the space to support reading, working from home, and tutoring needs simultaneously. This enables a family of four to share the public domain while maintaining flexibility between individual use and interaction.

Through layout reorganization and a subtractive design approach, spatial proportions were redefined, amplifying the advantages of three-sided natural lighting. Natural light now flows through the living room, dining area, and study, forming a continuous visual axis with depth. As light shifts throughout the day, it moves across walls, tabletops, and wood veneer textures, becoming an integral part of everyday life.

Formally, curved ceilings serve as the spatial framework. Exposed beams are reorganized through curved wrapping and stepped recesses, transforming the ceiling from a purely concealing plane into the expression that guides sightlines and connects different zones. Curves extend into corner elevations and detailing, maintaining a soft, stable, and continuous spatial state throughout the home.
