About The Entry
Tea Whispers of Miaoli is an industry–academia collaborative packaging project that reinterprets Taiwan’s tea heritage through contemporary ritual design. Created for the selected brands Maoli Kui Tea and TSENG’S Tea — recipients of the 34th Top Ten Shennong Farmer Award, The Leafies, and AVPA Double Gold International Awards — the project bridges ancestral tea craftsmanship with ecological consciousness.
The concept draws from 19th-century black-lacquered tea caddies with gold painting (Tea Caddies/Chest)—luxury Qing export artifacts that functioned as narrative information carriers. Gold-rendered tea production scenes once served as visual provenance for Western aristocracy. This design translates that storytelling tradition into a contemporary cultural interface, repositioning packaging as a medium of land memory.
Surface graphics reinterpret the visual language of lacquerware through FSC-certified mirror-finish art paper and selective print knockout, creating a lacquer-like faux hot-foil expression. Delicate gold linework maps Miaoli’s rolling “Knolls,” tea gardens, and the habitat of the leopard cat, transforming unboxing into a reconstructed cultural ritual of ecological awareness.
The structure embodies circular heritage practice: the sleeve unfolds into a table runner, the inner box becomes a tea display stand, and the handle converts into a vase, incense stand, or diffuser—extending tea culture into daily life.
The symbolic leopard-cat tea pet, designed by our team and manufactured by Miaoli Niyan-Cement Studio in eco-friendly Lotus cement, is nourished with tea infusion—representing reciprocity between land, ecology, and human ritual.
Through material translation, narrative revival, and structural circularity, the project reframes packaging as a living vessel of cultural continuity.
Unfold the mat. Listen to the knolls.
