André Leon Talley: Style Is Forever

André Leon Talley: Style Is Forever honors the enduring legacy of André Leon Talley — visionary editor, cultural icon, and cherished SCAD mentor. Showcasing nearly 70 looks from Talley’s personal collection, the exhibition highlights ready‑to‑wear, couture, and bespoke pieces that capture his most celebrated moments, from unforgettable Met Gala appearances to iconic front‑row ensembles, as well as attire from more private occasions.

Born in North Carolina, Talley rose from his Southern roots to build a singular career shaped early on by Diana Vreeland at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. His path traversed pop culture through his work with Andy Warhol at The Factory and ascended to fashion’s highest ranks alongside Anna Wintour at Vogue. Revered for his intellect, eloquence, and ability to situate contemporary design within a rich historical context, Talley redefined fashion commentary. His writing encouraged audiences to view beauty, identity, and authenticity through a broader, more inclusive lens.

The exhibition presents a curated selection of garments by designers such as Tom Ford, Ralph Rucci, Manolo Blahnik, and Dapper Dan, displayed with treasured mementos and artworks from friends including Diane von Furstenberg and Karl Lagerfeld. Made possible through Talley’s extraordinary bequest of clothing, accessories, and ephemera to the SCAD Permanent Collection, the exhibition celebrates his lasting influence on students, scholars, and future creatives. Presented across SCAD museums in Atlanta and Savannah, Style Is Forever commemorates the 10th anniversary of SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film. Throughout his long relationship with SCAD, Talley curated acclaimed exhibitions, welcomed leading designers to campus, and elevated cultural dialogue across the university. An accompanying exhibition catalogue captures Talley’s grandeur and global impact through new photographs by SCAD alumnus Allen Cooley, complemented by archival images from Jonathan Becker and Robert Fairer. Essays and personal recollections from colleagues and admirers offer insight into Talley’s private world and his profound, decades‑long contributions to fashion history.
