About The Entry

Sanbo Brain Hospital, Capital Medical University, reimagines human care through its thoughtfully designed signage system—an embodiment of its commitment to clinical excellence and compassionate service.

The hospital primarily serves elderly patients and those with cerebrovascular conditions—many of whom experience visual impairment, slowed reaction times, or limited mobility. Conventional signage often falls short in addressing their needs. In response, the system engages sight, touch, and hearing to create a genuinely accessible experience for all ages. Green, the signature color of Sanbo’s brand, symbolizes health and hope. It is seamlessly woven into the environment, transforming signage into a form of spatial art. Moreover, the visual language draws inspiration from the traditional Chinese “huiwen” pattern—a meander of continuous, interlocking square spirals—and the hospital’s architectural silhouette. Together, they reflect Sanbo’s enduring mission to uphold innovation while honoring medical heritage, and to place patients at the heart of all care.

Rather than applying a uniform approach, the design adapts to the character of each space. In specialized wards, color tones shift to align with clinical functionality and patient psychology. Materials are selected not only for durability but also for emotional resonance—chosen to harmonize with their surroundings, comfort patients, and elevate everyday use through thoughtful craftsmanship.

Sustainability is also central to the design. Modular components with standardized dimensions minimize material waste, while information is distilled to its essence, eliminating redundant decoration to enhance wayfinding efficiency and reduce material usage. Meanwhile, materials are recyclable, low-emission, and compliant with strict medical standards. Water-based inks replace solvent-based alternatives, reducing pollution during production and ensuring the system can be responsibly recycled at the end of its lifecycle.

This hospital signage system does more than guide people from one point to another. With its gentle visual language and thoughtful sensory details, it quietly accompanies each patient on their journey toward healing and hope.
