About The Entry

The Urban Lantern reclaims an overlooked side yard of an obsolete Upper East Side firehouse and transforms it into a vertical cultural center that bridges past and present. Rather than competing with the landmarked masonry structure, the addition emerges from it. A translucent glass veil grows organically along the party wall, twisting and tapering as it rises, as if shaped by the pressure of the surrounding city. The historic firehouse remains intact and legible, while the new intervention offers a contemporary counterpoint that is at once deferential and boldly civic.

The façade is conceived as a luminous membrane. Its ribbed, translucent glass softens daylight, filters views of neighboring buildings, and creates a subtle moiré against the dense Manhattan fabric. By day, the addition reads as a quiet, almost ethereal infill. By night, it becomes an urban lantern, revealing silhouettes of books, readers, and gathering, projecting cultural life back to the street.

Programmatically, the building is vertically stacked to maximize the narrow infill site. At street level, a bookstore anchors the public realm, activating the sidewalk and inviting entry through the preserved red doors of the firehouse. Above, flexible gallery spaces and reading rooms inhabit the interstitial volumes between old brick and new glass, where exposed masonry walls meet warm timber floors and shelving. The dialogue between textures - aged brick, oak millwork, and softly glowing glass - creates interiors that are intimate yet expansive.

At the summit, a triple-height library crowns the structure. Surrounded by curved glazing, it opens to panoramic city views while remaining wrapped in diffused light. Terraced stacks and stepped seating transform the library into both sanctuary and stage, a place for study, discourse, and public gathering.

The Urban Lantern restores a dormant urban fragment to civic life. It demonstrates how careful infill can preserve heritage, intensify cultural programming, and offer the city a new beacon without erasing its memory.
