Fort Fisher State Historic Site Visitor Center

Riggs Ward Design created 3,300 square feet of immersive permanent and changing exhibits for the new Visitor Center at Fort Fisher State Historic Site in Kure Beach, North Carolina. The result is a clear, narrative-driven experience that invites visitors to explore the site’s layered history through atmospheric environments, interactive components, and firsthand accounts.

The new 20,000+ square foot Visitor Center replaces the original 1965 facility and responds to a dramatic increase in visitation. The exhibit design anchors the building’s interpretive mission, offering accessible and engaging storytelling that situates Fort Fisher within the broader context of the Civil War and its evolving role in United States history. Through artifact integration, media experiences, and spatial sequencing, the gallery moves visitors chronologically while emphasizing the human stories behind the conflict.

Immersive environments evoke the scale and intensity of the fort and its coastal landscape, creating moments of reflection alongside opportunities for hands-on engagement. First-person narratives and primary source material bring diverse perspectives to life, connecting military strategy to lived experience and illustrating the enduring cultural impact of the site.
