Light and Shadow in Sequence

“Light and Shadow in Sequence” is a 198 sqm urban residence designed to accommodate the evolving dynamics of a multi-member household. Rather than imposing a fixed stylistic identity, the project redefines spatial relationships through circulation strategy, light modulation, and long-term adaptability.

The original layout lacked clear differentiation between public and private zones, resulting in overlapping activities and inefficient movement. The redesign introduces a structured circulation framework that separates yet connects domains. A dual-layer entry sequence establishes a transitional buffer between the exterior environment and the interior, reducing visual intrusion while enhancing spatial hierarchy.

Public spaces are organized along the primary façade to maximize natural daylight. The living, dining, and kitchen areas are connected through a looped circulation system, allowing multiple activities to occur simultaneously without spatial conflict. This configuration supports family interaction, children’s movement, and social gatherings within a coherent spatial order.

The kitchen island functions as the social anchor of the residence, transforming a traditionally task-oriented zone into a shared interaction platform. Adjacent to it, a flexible tatami room provides adaptive use—serving as study space, relaxation area, or temporary guest accommodation. This spatial flexibility anticipates future lifestyle shifts without requiring structural modification.

Private rooms are positioned along a central corridor, where controlled sightlines and measured distances maintain both continuity and independence. Curved architectural elements soften transitions, while layered lighting enhances depth, safety, and spatial comfort.

Sustainability in this project is approached through longevity rather than technological display. By prioritizing adaptability, daylight utilization, and durable material selection, the residence minimizes the need for future renovation. Natural light becomes a temporal indicator, subtly transforming the atmosphere throughout the day.
