Escape From the Panopticon

Escape from the Panopticon is a fashion design project that examines systems of surveillance and social control through structural experimentation. Inspired by the architectural logic of the Panopticon prison model, the collection translates circular and hexagonal prison blueprints into garment construction.
Using deconstruction and reconstruction as core methods, conventional pattern systems are disrupted through the integration of the anarchist “A” symbol and reorganized using musical notation from Anarchy in the U.K. as a structural framework. Rather than serving as surface references, these elements function as compositional systems that dictate proportion, incision, and spatial tension within each garment. The silhouettes emerge through fragmentation and reassembly, transforming restriction into spatial movement.
Material experimentation plays a central role in the project. Rhino-based 3D modeling was used to generate digital textures that were translated into flatbed prints, simulating armadillo-like protective surfaces. Knitwear integrates copper wire into wool yarn to introduce structural memory and metallic tactility. Zippers operate simultaneously as ornament and load-bearing construction, echoing punk’s mechanical language while maintaining functional adaptability.
Digital development through extensive use of CLO 3D enabled iterative structural testing, allowing garments to be prototyped, deconstructed, and reconstructed in a virtual environment before physical realization. In addition, leftover industrial zippers were repurposed into modular bag designs, extending the project’s logic of reconstruction beyond garments and emphasizing material circularity.
Rather than reproducing familiar punk aesthetics, the project investigates rule-breaking as a structural methodology—positioning fashion as an architectural and conceptual act of resistance.
