Perched on the southern slope of Mount Nanzhang in Guangzhou, directly adjacent to Yujiazhuang Reservoir, Xiangshanhu Lake Ode Slope Villa is embraced by verdant mountains to the rear and faces the lake, endowing it with exceptional natural landscape resources.
As a benchmark project for the courtyard villa typology, the design masterfully integrates Song Dynasty classical aesthetics with modern minimalist principles. The restrained use of wood and stone elements continues the elegant refinement of Chinese style. Furniture, wall panels, and cabinetry feature rounded-edge detailing, complemented by upholstered finishes, which effectively dispel the oppressiveness and rigidity often associated with traditional Chinese interiors. This synthesis of color and material imbues the space with a heightened sense of warmth and approachability. Accents of refined metal trim counterbalance the gentle texture of the wood veneer, further enhancing the spatial layering and contemporary feel.
The upper-level windows overlooking the double-height volume retain the formal language of traditional Chinese lattice windows. Through a process of simplification, they preserve a sense of heritage while presenting it in a lighter, more transparent manner. In the living and dining area, a fireplace feature wall constructed from a single slab of marble serves as the visual focal point. Framed with metal edging, it projects an air of dignified composure while simultaneously conveying simplicity and warmth. Treated as a lightweight partition, it functions both as a backdrop and a subtle divider between indoor and outdoor spaces, ensuring daylight penetration while offering a degree of privacy.
Expansive floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors facilitate a seamless connection between interior and exterior, allowing the sightlines of living room to extend unobstructed into the courtyard landscape beyond.
Through the restrained expression of materials, lines, and the interplay of light and shadow, the overarching design achieves a sense of spatial flow and integration, allowing traditional aesthetics to take root organically within the context of modern living.
