This project explores how spatial identity can emerge from limitation rather than abundance. The existing building was a fifty year old warehouse office with extremely low ceilings, a narrow mezzanine, and a steep stair originally designed only for storage access. Instead of treating these conditions as obstacles, the design strategy focused on revealing and refining them.
All ceiling finishes were removed to expose the original structure. The beams and slabs were carefully sanded and cleaned to achieve a hygienic condition suitable for a food environment while preserving their raw character. This decision allowed the maximum possible ceiling height to be maintained within a very limited renovation budget.
Material selection also followed a philosophy of honest transformation. Wood wool cement boards were introduced as a mediator between the rough concrete structure and the warmth required for a cafe environment. The material improves acoustics while maintaining the industrial memory of the building.
Another important aspect of the project is participation. The wooden installations that shape the spatial identity of the cafe were produced collaboratively by the designer, the owner, and even customers of the shop. This process transformed the act of construction into a shared experience, embedding collective memory into the interior itself.
Rather than relying on expensive finishes or large structural interventions, the project demonstrates how careful observation, minimal materials, and human collaboration can generate strong spatial character. PanNini proposes an approach to small scale urban renovation where constraints become opportunities for creativity and community.
