WAVE • Restaurant Interwoven with an Art Installation

CHAOYUE adopts “WAVE” as its central imagery, rooted in the ocean that gave birth to the culinary culture of Teochew in Guangdong. Taking this as its point of departure, the space distills the vitality of the sea and the innovative spirit of Teochew cuisine into a refined realm where art and experience converge. A discreet, sensor-activated door opens to reveal a reef that guides guests on a journey through the bar counter, the main hall, and the private dining rooms. The “WAVE” art installation, composed of 743 aluminum tubes, flows throughout the space, simulating the myriad forms of rolling, surging, and gathering waves. It weaves together a layered spatial narrative, endowing the dining experience with a sense of immersion and transcendence. Against a white backdrop, subtle scale-like hues emerge and recede, evoking the elusive vitality and beauty of the deep sea through the interplay of light and shadow.

The installation achieves a refined balance between visual lightness and structural efficiency. Through parametric modeling and precision prefabrication, the installation, lighting, and mechanical systems are seamlessly integrated, ensuring continuity and accuracy in every curved turn. All components were prefabricated off-site and assembled on-site. The modular structure enables disassembly, reconfiguration, and recyclability, preserving the material’s potential for circular use in future spatial transformations—embedding the concept of sustainability within form and construction.

The name “CHAOYUE” carries the spirit of transcendence. The “WAVE” serves not only as the spatial framework but also as a manifestation of this spirit—much like the continuous leap between heritage and innovation in Teochew cuisine. As guests wander and dine within this space, they find themselves immersed in an endless ocean current, experiencing both a modern interpretation of Teochew cuisine and a resonant journey of inheritance and transcendence.
