Spatial and Exhibition Design of the Huzhou Arts and Crafts

Guided by the concept of “Preserving the Jiangnan Essence, Revitalizing the Spirit of Craft,” this project reinterprets traditional Huzhou architecture within a contemporary exhibition framework to create a culturally distinctive and immersive ICH space. Drawing on key Jiangnan elements—timber structures, dark-tiled roofs, and corridors—the design employs wooden columns, traditional-style façades, and a light-toned palette to evoke an elegant and refined spatial atmosphere, reflecting Huzhou’s identity as the “Land of Crafts.” The spatial sequence follows a clear progression—Entrance Hall, Introductory Hall, Thematic Galleries, Interactive Zone—guiding visitors through a layered narrative experience with shifting perspectives and visual rhythms. Exhibits are organized by craft categories, including Huzhou brushes, Yixing teapots, silk, bamboo fans, and sculpture. Through carefully arranged display heights, warm lighting, and integrated graphics, objects are brought into dialogue with their cultural contexts. A central interactive space supports both public engagement and academic exchange, forming an integrated system of display, research, and dissemination. The project reactivates traditional craftsmanship within a contemporary spatial language, offering a renewed vision for ICH presentation.
