The Shikumen-style villa reinterprets its inherently compact scale as a spatial advantage, fostering a sense of intimacy, light, and quietude. A private garden defines the entrance sequence, leading into a living room that opens directly onto the courtyard, reinforcing indoor-outdoor interaction while extending functional possibilities for everyday living.

Drawing from traditional Shikumen architecture, baseboards and decorative moldings are abstracted and simplified to create a subtle sense of familiarity without relying on literal historic replication. A flexible sliding partition between the living and dining areas allows the space to shift seamlessly between openness and enclosure, adapting to various scenarios. Its surface pattern is derived from traditional Shanghai window grilles, restructured to preserve rhythmic qualities while aligning with a contemporary design language.

The mezzanine level is conceived as a social platform, accommodating diverse activities such as dining, art gatherings, and entertainment, reflecting the homeowner’s lifestyle and cultural preferences. The overall spatial strategy adopts a centripetal openness, encouraging fluid movement and visual continuity.

Material articulation further reinforces spatial identity: parquet wood flooring defines the lounge, while stone parquetry enhances the formal character of the dining area. Unified door frames soften transitions between zones, maintaining coherence. In the dining area, an enlarged wet bar supports formal functions, while recessed ceilings and orderly wine storage visually expand the perceived volume, achieving a balance between functionality, atmosphere, and spatial refinement.
