Avenues: The World School

Drawing inspiration from the whole-stage education philosophy of Avenues: The World School, this project reimagines student dormitories from mere living spaces into an integrated ecosystem that supports living, learning, socializing and personal growth. It upholds the core vision that spaces exist to serve education and crafted settings fuel growth.

Guided by four core principles—equity and respect, adaptability, human-centered design, and safety and practicality—the project moves beyond traditional thinking in campus dormitory design. For every key space, it starts with real-life usage needs and adopts a multi-functional design approach to integrate both daily and special-use modes. In shared communal areas, it uses modular furniture, track-mounted acoustic curtains and adjustable spotlights to support seamless transitions between more than ten spatial forms, enabling the limited space to flexibly cater to discussions, leisure, movie viewing and other diverse needs. It also integrates storage, display and interactive functions in a 3D layout through combined cabinetry and magnetic wall systems, achieving multi‑purpose utility and highly efficient use of space.

From room layout planning to shared space configuration, this project ensures every student enjoys an equally balanced spatial experience. It incorporates displays of student work and expressions of cultural diversity, strengthening a sense of belonging while creating an atmosphere that is rooted locally yet broad in global vision. In terms of materials and details, it prioritizes safety, practicality, water resistance, slip resistance and easy maintenance, striking a balance between aesthetics and functionality.

This project builds on the existing building renewal in Shenzhen, integrating the distinctive educational identity of the University Town of Shenzhen into the spatial network. It turns living spaces into an extension of education and adopts innovative practices to address human-centered living amid urban regeneration.
