About The Entry

Shunxi Wanshang EVOLVING FORMS - This work takes the Qing dynasty parallel prose rhapsody 'Imperial Ice Skating Rhapsody' as its cultural narrative starting point, and explores experimental dynamic typography centred on ice-skating culture. The typeface undergoes continuous transformations in time and space, creating a threshold state between writing, movement and imagery. The work distils the core qualities of ice-skating culture: 'cold, sharp, dynamic', translating the icy chill and explosive energy of movement into the typeface's dynamic tension. The character forms are inspired by the cuneiform writing system, generating a tense and energetic visual state between order and imbalance. The structure formed through a carved and stamped writing method metaphorically resonates with the physical interaction between body and ice in ice-skating. The typeface establishes overall order with a sans-serif skeleton, strengthens engraved traces with tapered strokes, and harmonises with circular elements, maintaining a dynamic balance between sharpness and roundness, responding to the regenerative possibilities of traditional writing structures in a contemporary context. Using parametric generation and dynamic graphics techniques, the text is deconstructed, reorganised and temporally interpreted. Strokes are no longer stable reading units but considered 'energy slices' manageable by algorithms, decomposing, extending and aggregating along a timeline, like the overlapping tracks left by groups gliding over ice, forming a visual language with a sense of ritual and choreographed rhythm. This process reflects both collective coordination in ice-skating and the evolution of text from primitive inscriptions and handmade writing to digital vectors and algorithmic generation. Through parametric dynamic generation, text becomes more than a vehicle for information; it evolves into a growing, performable and perceptible dynamic system. The work attempts to reactivate the spiritual core of traditional culture concerning body, ritual and writing in the present collaboration of art and technology, exploring the open possibilities of textual visual forms for the future.
