About The Entry
Priory Park has been reimagined as a greener, more vibrant space where nature and people can thrive together. Delivered in collaboration with Huntingdonshire District Council, the project focuses on enhancing biodiversity while maintaining the park’s role as an important place for recreation and everyday use.
Previously, much of the park consisted of intensively managed grassland with fragmented tree cover, offering limited opportunities for wildlife. The new design transforms this into a richer and more diverse landscape by introducing a variety of habitats, including woodland areas, wildflower meadows, and wetland features. These changes create a more balanced and resilient environment that supports a wider range of species.
A key aspect of the project is improving how these habitats connect. Rather than existing as isolated patches, woodland, meadow, and wetland areas are carefully arranged to form a continuous ecological network. This allows wildlife to move more freely through the park and strengthens its role within the wider green landscape of Huntingdonshire.
The design also focuses on creating habitats that support different stages of ecological development. Woodland edges are shaped to provide sheltered, transitional spaces that are especially valuable for birds, insects, and small mammals. Wildflower meadows bring seasonal colour and provide vital food sources for pollinators, while wetland areas improve water management and create new habitats for amphibians and aquatic life. Retained and repositioned deadwood further enhances biodiversity, supporting insects, fungi, and natural nutrient cycles.
At the same time, the park remains welcoming and accessible. A network of informal paths, including a woodland walk, allows visitors to explore the landscape and experience its changing character throughout the year.
The project is expected to deliver a significant increase in biodiversity, with habitat types expanded from two to five and an overall uplift of around 40–50%. Tree canopy cover has also been increased, helping to provide shade, improve air quality, and contribute to climate resilience.
By combining ecological enhancement with thoughtful design, Priory Park demonstrates how everyday green spaces can be transformed into healthier, more sustainable environments. It offers a model for how communities can support wildlife while creating meaningful, enjoyable places.
