WangFuJing Downtown Duty-Free Store (Changsha)

The project bridges the sleek, functional language of international transit hubs with the poetic beauty of Changsha’s landscape. By translating the ridges of Mount Yuelu and the currents of the Xiang River into spatial narratives, the design infuses a world-class duty-free environment with the city’s spirited soul.
The spatial experience is defined by fluidity and atmospheric rhythm. A central circular lounge anchors the plan, radiating curvilinear paths that intuitively guide visitors through the full retail offering—seamlessly aligning commercial throughput with aesthetic grace. Overhead, tiered timber ceilings with mirrored inserts dissolve structural weight into a play of light and shadow, while the floor contours define product zones through soft, visual boundaries. This rhythmic approach extends to the storefronts, where brand identities are integrated into a clean, cohesive facade that discreetly conceals technical infrastructure.
Realizing the project’s intricate, multi-curved geometry requires a rigorous methodology of ground-plane calibration and infrared projection. This approach facilitates the precise modular assembly of ceiling components, ensuring that all MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) terminals are perfectly integrated within the sculptural forms. The material palette balances heritage with pragmatic efficiency: 2 cm fine-grain tiles are reimagined through whole-slab cutting to evoke the timeless character of traditional street paving while significantly optimizing installation costs. By strategically alternating bespoke geometric features with exposed structural elements, the design maintains a sophisticated spatial hierarchy without compromising openness.
Sustainability is integrated into the project’s technical core rather than applied as an afterthought. Lighting systems are refined through exhaustive computational simulations to maximize luminous efficacy and minimize energy consumption without sacrificing visual comfort. The floor finishes feature high-grade recycled terrazzo—reclaiming stone waste into a durable, elegant surface that reduces raw resource extraction. From cultural storytelling to low-carbon engineering, every detail reflects a commitment to both urban ecology and the human-centric experience.
