LUMITOAST

LUMITOAST is an interactive wine glass designed for contemporary drinking and social environments. Inspired by British pub culture, where drinking is closely connected with belonging, conversation, and shared rituals, the design explores the balance between social connection and personal boundaries. In pubs, bars, dinners, and parties, raising or clinking a glass often represents friendliness, celebration, and openness. However, these gestures can also create subtle social pressure, as not every person enters a drinking space with the same intention.

LUMITOAST responds to this social contrast by integrating touch sensing and lighting feedback into the familiar form of a wine glass. When users are open to communication, clinking glasses triggers a gentle light that flows from the base to the body of the glass, transforming a traditional toast into a visible moment of connection. Different colors and light movements can express different social states, such as warmth, openness, calm participation, or distance.

When users prefer not to socialize, they can switch off the interactive mode. In this state, the glass remains unlit even when it touches another glass, allowing silence to become a respectful expression of personal boundaries. Through the contrast between light and stillness, LUMITOAST helps users communicate social willingness without words.

The innovation of this design lies not in adding light as decoration, but in using light as a social language.
