About The Entry
War and terrorism have fractured communities and devastated urban fabrics, eroding the cultural and social networks that once sustained everyday life. Responding to the post-war conditions of Mosul Old City, this collective housing project explores architecture as a catalyst for physical reconstruction and social recovery.
The design preserves the original terrain and employs locally sourced materials to reinterpret regional spatial traditions while reducing construction costs and accommodating post-war economic realities. A modular construction strategy improves efficiency and adaptability, enabling phased implementation and long-term resilience.
Beyond housing, the project integrates rainwater collection, urban planting, community learning spaces, and shared public amenities into a self-sustaining living environment. These interconnected programs address urgent functional needs while encouraging daily interaction and community rebuilding.
Through the creation of inclusive public spaces and a context-sensitive architectural language, the project transforms sites of trauma into places of belonging. Rather than simply restoring what was lost, it proposes a framework for cultural continuity, social cohesion, and sustainable urban regeneration in Mosul’s historic core.
