About The Entry

The project responds to the needs of a three-generation household in a mountainous residential context, addressing fragmented layouts, uneven daylight, and the requirement for a restrained modern interpretation of Chinese living traditions. Without altering the original structure, the design reorganizes circulation and spatial hierarchy through movable partitions, custom cabinetry, and vertical zoning, allocating public reception areas on the ground floor, family living spaces on the second, and private bedrooms on the third.

Inspired by Song-style spatial emptiness and the essence of traditional courtyard living, the design distills key Eastern motifs such as mountains and water, lattice structures, and geometric circular-square relationships into a contemporary spatial language. Large areas of visual openness, floor-to-ceiling glazing, and perforated wooden screens introduce natural scenery indoors while maintaining privacy and traditional spatial order. The use of light-toned materials combined with localized wood accents creates a calm, airy atmosphere, avoiding visual heaviness typical of conventional Chinese-style interiors.

Sustainability and comfort are achieved through FSC-certified wood, bamboo-based materials, low-VOC finishes, and reduced reliance on solid timber. A layered lighting strategy integrates ambient and functional illumination to enhance energy efficiency while shaping subtle Eastern light-shadow atmospheres. Moisture control strategies are integrated for the regional climate through treated timber, sealed finishes, and enhanced waterproofing systems, ensuring long-term durability and environmental adaptability. The design further emphasizes cost efficiency and construction practicality by optimizing modular built-in furniture and minimizing unnecessary decorative complexity, ensuring a balanced integration of aesthetics, functionality, and budget control.
