Project Background Architecture: A Gentle Encounter Between People and Nature Can architecture reconnect people with nature rather than separate them from it? Inspired by the vast rice fields of Hukou, Hsinchu, this project reinterprets the industrial workplace as an extension of the landscape. Instead of rigid boundaries, the building adopts a porous and layered form that welcomes daylight, wind, and views into the interior. Designed for electrical testing and office functions, it is conceived not as an isolated object, but as a natural presence within the agricultural setting—a place where architecture and nature coexist. Rather than separating people from nature, the project creates a sequence of transitional spaces where architecture gradually merges with the surrounding rice fields. Responding to Hsinchu's northeast and southwest monsoons, the building is composed of porous volumes connected by semi-outdoor passages, allowing daylight, wind, and seasonal changes to flow naturally through the workplace. Deep balconies and cascading terraces blur the boundary between inside and outside, transforming daily movement into an immersive experience of nature. Designed as a hybrid of high-voltage electrical testing facilities and office spaces, the project takes inspiration from the company's lightning symbol. More than an icon of energy, the lightning bolt represents the dynamic and unpredictable geometries found in nature. While the structural grid establishes order, diagonal V-shaped braces introduce an organic rhythm reminiscent of branching trees. As sunlight passes through the steel frames, shifting shadows animate the exposed concrete surfaces, creating spatial experiences similar to walking beneath a forest canopy. Materiality emphasizes authenticity and longevity. Fair-faced concrete provides a timeless architectural expression, while dark steel frames define the building's geometry. Expansive glazing reflects the surrounding landscape, visually dissolving the boundary between architecture and nature. Together, concrete, steel, and glass express the balance between technology, landscape, and human activity. Human experience remains central to the design. A six-meter-high testing hall accommodates industrial functions, while the office floors offer a more intimate working environment.
