About The Entry
A traditional Chinese garden embodies the relationship between nature, architecture, and people. In contemporary life, the garden becomes a form of spiritual order.
Inspired by the cultural heritage of Chang’an and the aesthetics of classical Chinese gardens, Xi’an Gemdale Yunxitai reinterprets spatial principles such as concealment and revelation, enclosure and openness, framed views, and unfolding scenery. Conceived as “A Contemporary Garden Reverie,” the project creates an immersive environment to be explored, contemplated, and experienced.
The spatial sequence unfolds gradually. Layered circular vaults overlap like auspicious clouds, establishing a dignified sense of arrival. Pomegranate-blossom wall lights illuminate the colonnade, while a bespoke central installation abstracts the flower’s corolla, stamens, and unfolding petals. Light filters through its layered structure, transforming Chang’an’s symbolism of prosperity into an artwork that can be viewed, circled, and physically perceived.
The reception desk is positioned away from the central axis, preserving uninterrupted views toward the courtyard. Floor-to-ceiling glazing dissolves the boundary between inside and outside, drawing trees, water, stone, and changing daylight into the interior. As visitors move from the lobby to the lounge, the scale becomes more intimate. Carefully composed furniture groupings accommodate both open encounters and private conversations, while warm brown, ivory, and champagne-gold tones establish an atmosphere of understated refinement.
Traditional lacquer and gold-leaf techniques are reinterpreted through contemporary art. Branches and floral shadows emerge from richly textured surfaces, allowing heritage craftsmanship to function not as ornament, but as a medium for memory, time, and cultural continuity.
Tea rooms, a floral salon, reading and craft areas, and fitness facilities accommodate different rhythms of contemporary life. Tea, conversation, flower arranging, reading, making, and exercise become part of the garden journey, turning art from a static display into a participatory and shareable experience.
The journey concludes in a serene upper lobby, where a circular ceiling represents the sky and dark stone reflects like still water. A suspended cloud-inspired installation becomes the spiritual emblem of the space.
Rather than reproducing a traditional garden, the project reorganizes the relationship between nature, culture, and everyday life through a contemporary design language—allowing the spirit of Chang’an to be experienced anew.
