Wu Fmily Study House

As a unique form of educational institutions in ancient China, academies are of great significance for the inheritance of Confucius teachings. With Confucianism at its core and ancient Chinese academies being the source of inspiration, this project uses a new, Chinese-style design approach to combine elements of tradition with modern materials so as to create a perfect study and resting place for students and teachers.

Dark walnut wood as the main building material lays the foundation for a sober tone through its sedate color and smooth lines. Dotted with elements of Confucian culture, the project creates a strong academic ambience. Extensive use of floor-to-ceiling windows eliminates the sense of boundary with the outside world while letting in abundant natural light which, combined with interior light, creates a breathing space, gives a sense of transparency, and provides good illumination and a nice atmosphere for teachers and students to read. Areas of different functions are partitioned yet not completely divided, a design that highlights the different function of each area while eliminating the sense of boundary and promoting the interaction of space. In addition, the reading area and the negotiation room are separated from other areas to meet the needs of teachers and students for in-depth reading and communication.

For the children's area on the third floor, a different design style is adopted. The designer uses a light color scheme and smooth lines to create a soft tone and a casual, laid-back atmosphere. Natural light comes in from the window and blends with the light from the cloud-shaped lamps to form a mottled interplay between light and shadow. The star-themed wallboard with a futuristic look and the moon-shaped bookshelf with a an oriental style create a strong contrast which is conducive to stimulating children's imagination and help them learn traditional culture and cultivate creative thinking.
