Hong Kong Designers Association (HKDA) deployed pixels as the main visual of the Global Design Awards (GDA) of 2018. The movement of pixels in animation was like birds of a feather flocking together, notionally representing the “convergence and divergence” of creative talents in response to the gravity rippled by GDA.
We used 400 recyclable corrugated carton boxes to make a hanging installation enhanced by projected motion graphics as a visual anchor. The motion graphics echoed with GDA’s theme featured the convergency and divergency of pixels. The intent is multiple fold: to echo with the main visual of the Awards; to project brand presence as the three giant alphabets G-D-A could be vividly seen when the carton boxes were overlapped and pieced up in a new perspective, to give maximum space for exposing the award entries as a token of appreciation and, to create an ambience for enriching visitor’s enjoyment.
Another 1,400 carton boxes were designed in different configurations to cater for different display requirements such as partitions, benches, platforms, showcases, computer and video kiosks for exhibiting GDA winning entries to create a new perspective for the visitor to look at the artworks.
In the end, we have created an environment that is nondidactic, warm, cozy and can elevate appreciation of creativity within a modest budget. The exhibition has attracted 11,200 visitors in total and created good impression among audience.
