The homeowner envisaged a residence radiating with soul and spirit. It should reflect the teachings of I-Ching, which represents his life philosophy. The designer delved into its ancient wisdom to infuse the modern design with I-Ching and realize the homeowner’s wishes.
More than just a space to pass time each day, a home serves a greater purpose. It is a base and unique vantage point from which to pursue a well-balanced life. That balance is exemplified by the intersection of modern design and ancient philosophy. Just as the revered teachings describe the balance between yin and yang, and time and space, this residential space harbors the balance of contrasts combining for a greater good.
The coexistence of yin and yang is key to I-Ching. Although apparently in contrast, they act in concert. This is seen throughout the design. White living room walls and black bookshelves play off one another, while contrasting angles and bends of the ceiling and kitchen island dance together. These dynamics create a mesmerizing spectacle, symbolizing the complementary nature of yin and yang and harmony between stillness and motion. That is the natural law of the universe. The entryway cabinet, living room wall, bookshelves, dining bar, and ceiling possess myriad linear variations along the same axis to exude an ornate sense of spatial beauty.
I-Ching is explained through hexagrams, describing situations. A hexagram of Jin, describing “Fire above Earth,” is incorporated into the balcony wall. Jin represents advancement and positive energy. Its image is of the Sun rising above Earth. The balcony receives bountiful sunlight and absorbs positive energy. Those cues encourage the homeowner to self-reflect and enhance personal enrichment.
The bookshelf comprises hexagrams of Qian (Heaven) and Kun (Earth) with Jia-Ren (Family) embraced in the middle. This placement signifies that Family comes forth from Heaven and Earth, and Family is the nucleus of the home.
I-Ching permeates the design, reflecting the homeowner’s life philosophy. Contrasting features interact and play off one another with the sum greater than its parts. Ancient wisdom incorporated within stunning, modern design creates a home balanced in harmony.
