Themed with “reside in bustling cities as great hermits; live in seclusion among deep mountains”, this project is a cultural tourism complex located in the mountain-surrounded Xiaoxigou Town. Based on the local culture, the project design combines modernity with architecture styles of Song Dynasty to achieve harmonious integration of natural and artificial beauty.

The Entertainment Center is a major facility and architecture of the complex. To recreate the unique Song style, the designers studied the architecture of the time and incorporated traditional low-saturation color schemes into natural building materials to set an elegant tone. As the noble characters of Song literati are not revealed by literal analyses of their poems, but through the reader’s imagination of the spirituality in those lines, we strive to give visitors the same freedom of imagination. Round and straight lines are ubiquitous through the design, connecting rooms and courtyard with mountains in the outside to utilize the landscape and enhance the overall scenery. Different types of lines intersect with each other, creating an illusionary beauty interlaced with reality and fantasy. Seeing the beautiful views, visitors can experience vicariously the lives of ancient literati and get a glimpse of the Song culture. Soft furnishings including stone carvings, grasses, trees, landscape paintings, as extra touches to the elegance, offer visitors richer spiritual enjoyment and direct their attention to the natural beauty that soothes their body and mind. Patterns on the facade and traditional carved furniture are replaced by simple modern designs. The two minimalist styles from different times contrast and intermingle with each other, resulting to an almost philosophical integration of Song style and the zeitgeist of Gen Z, and eliciting strong responses from visitors. The B&B building, another main architecture, is consistent in style with the Center. It has larger floor-to-ceiling windows to let in more natural light, which adds a sense of vastness and lightness to the space and enhances the interaction between the interior and the outside scenery, demonstrating the harmony between man and nature through the unity and beauty of the entire space.
