Wuxi Sky Square

Dplus Studio’s recent renovation of Sky Square in Jiangsu Provence, Wuxi City illustrates this contemporary crossroads, and demonstrates how by expanding malls’ functionality and reconsidering circulation, these sizeable structures can be reabsorbed by the city as useful public spaces of engagement and exchange.

The original name of the project is "Taihu Peninsula International Plaza", which was built in 2006. It is the fashion benchmark of Wuxi at that time, and also the memory of the first generation of business complex of the old Wuxi people. Wuxi is the cradle of China's national industry and township industry, as well as one of the most developed cities in the Yangtze River Delta. Liangxi District is the core urban area of Wuxi. Despite the favorable location, due to the confusion of operation positioning and the impact of e-commerce, the merchants basically moved out, and the ground floor became the community activity place for the surrounding residents. Therefore, the shopping mall at that time was soon neglected.

Dplus Studio is tasked with transforming the commercial public space and facade of "Taihu Peninsula Plaza". In the facade, despite its contemporary connotations, we link the shopping center with its urban context. On the west side of taihu lake is the most poetic and representation of the city sites, we inspired by sail in taihu lake, puts forward the concept of "thousand sails to compete sends", to show the intention to sail in taihu lake, split the facade of glass, aluminum sheet and the LED screen, create variety, multi-level merchants display interface, hope that through the powerful visual image, To create a variety of visual links for the public and business. At the entrance, the scale of the canopy is increased to 40m long, providing the surrounding residents and businesses with the possibility of square activities. The lighthouse next to the canopy has also been raised 15m to provide visual guidance over a wider area.

Dplus Studio’ smart renovation of Wuxi Sky Square achieves just this balance: now fully flexible multimedia, lifestyle venue, it doesn’t dominate the Jingan skyline; rather it complements a rich, varied urban fabric.
