This Project included all front of house public & guestroom areas in a boutique luxury hotel in Silicon Valley. The hotel was centered around art & conveyed the feeling of a hybrid between a studio & an art gallery. The artists, art consultant & the owner were very involved in the project & made lighting the artwork a primary objective. All light sources had high color rendering values, R9 values greater than 95 & incorporated warm-dim technology that would allow lighting to become warmer & more golden as it dims. Hexcell louvers were incorporated into all adjustable fixtures for glare control. Lighting power densities exceeded California’s Title 24 requirements. A dimming system is utilized in every public space. With entire walls of glass on one side of the public spaces, the balance of daylight & artificial light, particularly with the interior dark grey ceilings, is critical. Time-clock settings & fade times are instrumental in transitioning from day to night. The main lobby, lounge, dining & bar spaces were designed with exposed dark grey ceilings, presenting a considerable challenge for a typical indirect ambient lighting approach. The introduction of custom wood slat floating canopies throughout provided a warm decorative solution to the industrial open ceiling & gave the custom antique brass pendants’ warm-dim LED uplighting a surface with which to reflect indirect light within each space. Standard budget restrictions were identified fairly early in the design process & allowed us to move forward with specified & acceptable alternates. While the floating panels carried the ceiling plane, the unique artworks & finishes throughout allowed focal accents on multiple vertical surfaces to pop. Architectural elements at the elevator lobby & other feature walls were dramatically outlined & washed to emphasize their strength & important role in the design. The bar, the central figure of the dining area, incorporates integrated shelf uplights make the bottles & backlit glass glow & under counter lighting highlights the special bar finish below. Surface mounted adjustable fixtures in the exposed ceiling spot tables while recessed adjustables in the wood ceiling accent bottles & bar features.
